Toilets 101: What You Need to Know Before Buying a Toilet

Toilets are among the essential items in your home. Although choosing the right toilet may seem easy at first glance, once you get started shopping, you will realize there is more. The colour and cost of the bathroom are essential, along with water conservation and flushing power. Different models might be needed in different bathrooms, depending on the person using them.

Before you make a decision, here are some things to consider:

Toilet bowl Height

Although opinions vary, a standard bowl height is 14, 15, or 16 inches above the ground. Comfort bowls are taller and can be used for seniors or those with limited mobility. To ensure that the model is suitable for you, it is worth sitting down on it before buying it.

Different Toilet Bowl Shapes

Round-front bowls used to be the only option. Elongated or pear-shaped toilets were then available with additional space at the front. Before you decide on the size of the toilet, measure the space in which it will be installed. They can take up two inches more space than a round bowl.

Flush Types

Did you know there were many ways to flush?

• Gravity-fed models use gravity to pour water into the toilet bowl using natural force. This creates a siphoning effect that pushes waste into the sewer line.

• The pressure-assisted version has sealed internal tanks filled with water and creates air pressure. The water pressure completes the job when you flush.

• A power-assisted toilet uses a small electric motor that creates air pressure in the sealed tank.

• High-efficiency models produce powerful flushes using a minimal amount of water. They can also use any flushing action.

• Dual-flush toilets use less water and require less water to flush. Each action requires a different flush mechanism.

Design Options

There are three primary options for toilet design:

1. The foot design indicates whether the bowl is solid or partially in contact with the floor. Solid foot bowls extend to the wall.

2. Wall mount models attach directly to the wall, with the tank hidden within a wall cavity. This option is ideal if you need more floor space or the toilet will be located in a small area.

3. Tankless toilets can be connected directly to a water supply line, which helps clear out waste. Pumps or other devices can assist if your home does not have enough water pressure to flush the bowl.

Lid Control and Seating Options

While comfort is essential, there are many other options. Some homeowners are opting for heated and bidet-style seating. A seamless lid, which closes quietly and gently, is one of the best features that you can get. This makes it an excellent choice for middle-of-the-night considerations and is safer for children and their delicate fingers. These tips will help you find the perfect toilet.
